Bay Area Women Against Rape

BAWAR is the nation's first rape crisis center having been founded in 1971 as the direct result of the rape of a teenage girl. The treatment this young girl received by both the police and the hospital personnel was horrific. Because of this, a small group of women, including the young woman's mother, started BAWAR in an effort to effect changes in the treatment received by sexual assault survivors and to offer support and conseling to them. To this end, BAWAR offers the following services:

• A 24-hour hotline for sexual assault survivors, their family and friends
• A 24-hour on-call service to all hospitals and police departments in Alameda County(excluding Pleasanton, Livermore, and Dublin) to asssist in supporting survivors through the medical and legal process
• Court accompaniment
• Short term in-person conseling for sexual assault survivors and their significant others
• Therapy referrals
• Support groups for rape and incest survivors
• Self defense workshop referrals
• Professional trainings for police officers, emergency room medical personnel, therapists, teacher and school administrators, and clergy
• School programs, junior high through college-age
• Community presentations
• Offender outreach/education programs in both Vacaville and San Quinton prisons
• Therapy resources and referrals for ritual abuse survivors

All of BAWAR's direct client services are offered free of charge and are confidential.
